Tools and Resources for Monitoring and Evaluation

Monitoring and Evaluation Tools:

Coach Skills Assessment

This is a sample tool that you can use to evaluate a coach’s ability to demonstrate certain key skills he or she would have learned in a training. This assessment could happen at the end of the training or observing a coach in action with his or her team.

Monitoring and Evaluation Implementation Schedule

Successful M&E implementation requires you to be able to answer the what-who-how-when of fully administering the tool(s), This spreadsheet provides an example of an in depth monitoring and evaluation "implementation plan" for a youth program. It includes a list of each of the M&E tools being used (the what), who is responsible for each part of successfully administering the tool (the who), what exactly each person involved is responsible for (the how) and the timeline the work needs to be completed by (the when).

Most Significant Change Activity

“Most Significant Change” has emerged as an engaging and effective way to collect valuable information about program impact. We have recently been using a variation of this evaluation technique with programs. This document is a short overview of how to use this technique.

Youth Worker Self Assessment

This is a simple self-assessment we have created for one of our clients to assess perceived change in youth worker’s behavior and attitude. If you are interested in more information on this tool or getting a copy of the Excel spreadsheet to code the data please contact us.

Camp Evaluation Tool

Over the course of several years we collaborated with Children in the Wilderness in southern Africa to help them design and implement several camp-based interventions for vulnerable youth in Namibia and Malawi. One of the most powerful tools we created for this initiative was a camp evaluation tool. This tool allowed us to assess their unique intervention relative to both typical minimum camp standards as well as the aspirational standards set forth by the sponsoring partners. We have created similar evaluations for other organizations and programs.

Program Experience Survey

This is a tool we have adapted from other similar surveys. It is designed for participants to take and it assesses their general experience in the program. This type of evaluation tool can provide valuable information about whether your program is creating the type of environment you are aspire to foster and to identify areas for improvement. If you are interested in more information on this tool or getting a copy of the Excel spreadsheet to code the data please contact us.

Recommendations for Developing a Meaningful Monitoring and Evaluation System for Your Organization

In September 2010, Edgework lead several table workshops at the Beyond Sport Summit around best practices and cutting edge ideas in monitoring and evaluation. In preparation for this workshop, we interviewed and collected some of the most current thinking around creating successful M&E systems in NGO’s and other organizations. This document is a high-level summary of this research.

Guidebook on Visual Approaches to Presenting Focus Group Data

Focus groups are one of the primary ways we can collect information about participant and stakeholder experience with our program. Images can often create a more powerful reaction and engage a reader in a deeper way than a text-based report. This document helps us to think creatively about how we present focus group data by offering several step by step options for presenting your focus group data visually. The results are images that will not only engage your readers but effectively share valuable information.

M&E Guidebook

This guidebook is an example of the type of comprehensive M&E tools and implementation plans that we have created for clients. It highlights our broad capabilities: from creating logic models to designing monitoring and evaluation tools to ensuring effective and consistent data collection and analysis.

Making the Most of Primary M&E Tools

A presentation that Edgework presented at the Beyond Sport Summit 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa. This presentation outlines a continuum for how to understand the range of tools that can be used to monitor and evaluate a project. Learn about how to effectively use basic M&E tools including attendance data, essays/artwork, focus groups and basic surveys.

Performance Monitoring Plan (Template)

A performance monitoring plan is a tool that is used to organize all of your indicators and how your tools will measure them. This is a template that can be used for completing a performance monitoring plan.

Indicators-Tools Matrix (Template)

This matrix can help you coordinate each of your indicators and which tools are measuring which indicator.

Logic Model (Template)

A simple template that you can use to design your own logic model.

The Power of Relationship: Exploring the Impact Young Adults can make on the Mental Health of Children in Gaza

Originally created for the 24th Annual Children's Mental Health Research and Policy Conference in Tampa, Florida, Spring 2011; this poster describes the results of the "Eye to the Future(E2F)" after-school program designed for Palestinian children living in Gaza. The focus of this program is on the powerful relationship between a caring young adult and a child. Young Palestinians were trained as Mentors using five key Vital Connections and Culture Building: skills. The results of this program to date are revealing statistically large results across all major indicators. Children and parents are reporting upwards of 50% reductions in aggressive and rule-breaking actions, negative thoughts, attention and social problems and anxiety.

Evaluation of the Doc Wayne Athletic League

The Doc Wayne Athletic League has conducted one of the most in-depth evaluations of outcomes in the sports-based youth development field. This report outlines the fascinating evaluation methodology and findings.
